5 Steps To Buying a Gun in California

1. Take a Firearm Safety Test to receive a FSC (Firearm Safety Certificate). This is valid for 5 years.

  • Costs $25 to take and it covers 2 attempts. If failed first attempt, the
second attempt must have a 24-hour gap in between the failed and retake.
  • Pass a 30-question multiple choice test with a score of at least 75%.
  • If lost, the FSC card can be replaced by whomever the DOJ Instructor was
    that issued it.
  • CCW Holders, Law Enforcement, Valid Hunting License Holders, P.O.S.T.
Certified and Military (Active, Reserve, and Honorably Discharged) are exempt
from needing an FSC with proper credentials.

2. Requirements for buying a long gun (Rifle/Shotgun):

  • Present a valid FSC Card or Hunting License and Valid Real California ID
    or Military/LE ID.
  • If a person does not have a Real ID (Card will say Federal Limits Apply)
than they can use a Valid US Passport or Birth Certificate.
  • If P.O. box is listed you must have government documentation showing your
current address: Vehicle Registration, DMV Information Printout, CCW Permit,
    Security Card, etc.

3. Requirements for a handgun:

  • Present a Valid FSC Card and Real California ID of Military/LE ID
  • Have a 2nd proof of Residence that matches CA ID. You can use one of the
following: Rental or Lease Agreement, Vehicle Registration, Utility Bill within
the last 3 months (City trash, water, electricity or gas), Property Deed, DMV
Disabled Placard Paperwork, Hunting License, or CCW Card.

4. Be patient during the 10-day waiting (Cool Down) period while your background is processed.

  • California has a 10-day waiting period after the purchase or transfer of
all firearms before it may be taken into possession.

5. Pick up your firearm 10 days after the time in which the background check was processed. All DROS paperwork is date and time stamped.

As of 03/11/2024 there is no limit to the number of handguns or long guns that you can buy at one time.
