What do i need to do in order to purchase ammunition in California?
It's pretty simple. You will need to a have purchased or registered a firearm at your current residence and have a California Real ID that matches the address. When you pick up your purchase, we will run the eligibility check which costs $1.00 and takes about 30 seconds.
If your ID says "FEDERAL LIMITS APPLY" you will need to provide a second form of identification such as an U.S. Passport or Passport Card, Certified copy of U.S. birth certificate, Certificate of Naturalization, U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Card
Is there a limit to how much ammunition I can buy?
No. You can buy any amount of ammunition you choose and any caliber. The DROS eligibility check allows you to buy any caliber regardless of the caliber of firearm you have registered.
How old do I need to be to buy ammunition?
You must be at least 18 years old to purchase rifle or shotgun ammunition, and at least 21 years old to purchase handgun ammunition.
Can I buy ammunition online and ship it to my house in California?
Unfortunately not. You will need to ship it to a licensed FFL or California Ammunition Vendor and undergo an eligibility check at the time you pick up. UPDATE JULY 2024: The FFL or CAV that delivers the ammunition is required to collect the 11% excise tax and is considered the vendor of record.
At Ammunition1 we provide easy online purchasing and free pickup in any one of our stores. No transfer fees.
What if I am not California resident?
Ammunition purchases in California must be made by California residents.
What if i moved since i purchased or transferred my firearm?
If you have moved since you registered your firearm you need to update your AFS record at the DOJ website: CFARS.DOJ.CA.GOV
Go to the website, create a new account and input your new address which should match your California ID.
Is a photo of my ID sufficient?
Unfortunately no. We are required to take a scan of the original documents each time you purchase ammunition. This includes your passport or secondary ID should you not have a REAL ID.
Do you keep any of my information?
We are required to keep the ammunition sales record for five years in paper form. We do not keep digital files. The record
is the simply the signed print out from the DROS check.
What is the Depart of Justice check (DROS) actually doing?
Starting July 1, 2019, California law requires eligibility checks for all ammunition purchases. It's not an FBI background check. It is simply a check of the California gun registration database. If you have legally purchased or transferred a hand gun since 1996 or a long gun since 2014 you will qualify for ammunition purchases.
It takes about 30 seconds to complete and requires 1 signature for each caliber/brand combination you purchase.
What if I am having issues wtih the Standard Eligibility Check?
Most of the time it is a name record or address match issue. You can update them both on the CFARS site here.
If you are still having issues you can try the Basic Eligibility Check.
Fee: $19 (compared to the $1 for a standard check).
Timeline: The DOJ has up to 10 days to complete this check.
